McLISH CLOSED

June 17 , 2004

Apparently, McLish Schools have closed for good.

The Daily Oklahoman reports the proposal to merge with Stonewall Public Schools passed, with 167 (88.4%) voting YES and 22 (11.6%) voting NO.

Stonewall Public Schools have offfered to hire all McLish's teachers.

We've been told that the McLish facilities will be used for elementary students, and will be called McLish Elementary, but will be part of the Stonewall school system.

Kevin Flowers is the new superintendant of the Stonewall system, so Kevin, if you see this, I'd like to hear from you!

I don't have any more information at the moment, but when I can get some, I'll post it here.

McLish Web Site

McLish had its own web site at http://www.pontotoc.com/mclish/index.htm, but the site hasn't been updated since March, 2004, and it seems likely it won't be updated much.

Forum Updated To Allow Guest Posting

You can now post messages on the forum without registering. We'll try this out for a while, to see if we can get some activity there. If we end up with inappropriate postings or spam, I'll have to switch back to requiring registration. For now, though, give it a shot, share your memories of McLish, your notes on the history, etc.

A history of McLish Schools is now online!

Thanks to Kathy Howry for scanning in a copy of the history, "And Then Came Oil, The McLish Story" that she wrote with Linda Thompson Crownover, and published in 1989. Though she was unable to locate the original word processor files (which would probably have been very, very hard to read in anyway, since the files would have been from 1988-89, and those old word processors probably don't exist anymore), Kathy sent the scanned images of each page to me, and I passed them through OCR software, cleaned up most (I hope) of its mistakes, formatted it for the web, and have posted it on this site. Click here to read the history of McLish Schools. Kathy takes us all the way back to the Franks and Onward schools, leading up to the 1935 creation of McLish and hitting highlights right up to publication.

There's more - Kathy also sent the history of the Fitts Oil Field itself that her husband Jack wrote, and she's already sent short bios of all the superintendents of the system throughout its history. At least up to publication in 1989 or so, ending with Woody Pryor. As soon as I have time, I'll add this history and the bios to the site as well.

Throughout the history, there are mentions of some of the photos and other things included in the published edition. I'm hopeful that as Kathy has time, she'll scan in those images and send them to me, so we can add them to the site as well.

After reading Kathy's history, I realized that I already knew the Harden City wing school had been moved to the McLish campus - it currently serves as the elementary school. I'm in the process of updating the captions on the school photos.

Grace Boeger has written a book about Byrd's Mill Springs--it also involves student essays so area schools are involved. She is wanting old photos of Byrd's Mill and of anything connected to the town of Franks.

If you did not receive your copy of the newsletter, you can click here to see it. The reunion was held on June 6, 2003, at McLish, and on June 7, 2003, with dinner at the Elks Lodge in Ada.

Roll call posted! Click here to see the list of those at the dinner at the Elks' Lodge in Ada on June 7, 2003.

Banquet Program posted! Click here to see the program from the Reunion Banquet at the Elks' Lodge in Ada on June 7, 2003.

Photos are up!

I've started getting photos in, and they're up on the photos page. When you go to that page, just click on the small image to see a larger one.

Where are they now?

Looking over at classmates.com, quite a few McLish alumni have signed up, but that site requires payment in order to contact your former classmates, and even at that, doesn't show their email address. Some of the addresses are even out of date.

The forum is up!

A listing of alumni who wish to make their details public is now available.
